Continuing the education of engineers or in engineering is a priority to the American
Society of Civil Engineers. The Branch seeks to recognize and reward those who choose
to continue their education at one of the five Branch universities (CSULA, CSUN, LMU,
UCLA, or USC) through the Le Val Lund Memorial Graduate Scholarship.
As a lifelong advocate of higher education, Le Val Lund set a standard for many engineers
to follow. He was a man who motivated all people around him to excel. He earned his
Masters Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Southern California after
attending Occidental College and Caltech through the Navy V-12 program.
Le Val was born in Los Angeles on February 24, 1923. He died peacefully at home on
November 30, 2007. He served as an engineer in the Seabees during World War II. In
1947 he began a 42-year career as a civil engineer with the Los Angeles Department of
Water and POWER (DWP). He helped design, construct and operate many projects for the
DWP including the Second Los Angeles Aqueduct, and numerous dams, filtration plants,
reservoirs, water tanks, and pumping stations.
After he retired in 1989, Le Val became a recognized expert in the field of the impact of
earthquakes on urban lifelines (systems for water supply, electricity, gas, sewerage, and
communications). He traveled worldwide visiting earthquake sites and provided
consultation for various dam and water systems.
He was a member of several engineering organizations including the Water and Power
Associates, the American Waterworks Association, and the Association of California
Water Agencies. Le Val Lund served as the first ASCE MLAB President in 1997. He has
set a legacy within the society and this scholarship, presented by the Metropolitan Los
Angeles Branch of ASCE, is dedicated to his memory and his leadership.
