The Metropolitan Los Angeles Branch (MLAB) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is pleased to open a call for nominations for our 2020-2021 Board of Directors. If multiple nominations are received, our elections will be held in August and the term will begin October 2020. Below is the nomination form and description of board positions up for election.

The 2020-2021 ASCE MLAB President will be Ruwanka Purasinghe, who is currently serving as the 2019-2020 President-Elect. Should you have any questions, please feel free to reach Ruwanka at Ruwanka.Purasinghe@ladwp.com.

Nominations will be accepted until the end of Friday, August 14, 2020. 


The President Elect shall ensure the Branch is running effectively and being productive to support the Branch Members. This involves possibly planning and organizing events, making sure correspondences are going out in a timely manner, and acting on behalf of the President in any and all meetings the President is unable to attend. The President-Elect shall also Chair the Budget Committee.

Vice President

The primary role of the Vice President is to work with the Committee Chairs to ensure a healthy and active event calendar throughout the year. This entails assisting when needed to staff committees, obtain speakers/tours, and support events.


Maintains the Branch bank accounts and monitors the money entering and leaving the account. Prepares monthly budget updates, and assists the President in funding requests/applications. The Treasurer shall also chair the Audit Committee and work with LA Section on the distributions to the YMF and local Student Chapters.


Responsible for correspondences coming from the Branch through email, website, or social media updates. Shall prepare the monthly board meeting agenda and take meeting minutes. The Secretary shall maintain the Branch Contact List, update the website, maintain the Bylaws, and assist with the annual report.


Government Affairs

Organize and promote events between various government agencies and Branch members to further engage engineers into public policy.


Responsible for documenting events throughout the year through photographs, videos, etc.

K-12 Outreach

Organizes K-12 STEM educational outreach on behalf of the Branch to educate and inspire the next generation of engineers.

Newsletter Editor

Organizes and manages the content, format, and distribution of the Branch Newsletter. Newsletters should include a President’s Message, upcoming events, summary of past events, and info on board members. Newsletter Editor will also be responsible for maintaining the Branch Website Blog.


Maintain database of ASCE Los Angeles Membership through database with ASCE National. Provide monthly membership updates to President-Elect to add to email distribution.

University Outreach

Serve as a liaison between MLAB and student chapters. Organize events that support the 5 local Student Chapters under MLAB which include UCLA, USC, CSULA, CSUN, and LMU. Shall collaborate with the LA YMF University Outreach Chair to represent the local professional ASCE Chapters.

Awards Night

Leads the effort to plan and organize the Annual Branch Awards Night which awards professionals and projects throughout the LA County area. Responsible for forming a committee, hosting the award applications, organizing the review panel, and coordinating the awards banquet in Summer 2021.

Professional Development

Organize events based on building the professional development of Branch members including technical presentations, tours, and other professional events.


Organize social events for Branch members to promote networking and engage other professional societies.
