

The Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) Los Angeles (LA) Chapter was founded in July 2020 to connect, unite and collaborate with the fellow structural engineers, young professionals and students in Los Angeles region for innovation and advancement in the field of structural engineering and to develop future leaders.
Goals:

To connect and unite fellow structural engineers in Los Angeles region and to foster professional development through continual interaction and participation.

To develop future leaders by educating, engaging and collaborating with younger structural engineers and students.

To update the fellow engineers of the innovation and advancements in the field of structural engineering.
Plans:

Participate in monthly meetings with ASCE Metropolitan Los Angeles Branch, third Tuesday of every month.

As membership grows, host independent SEI member meetings on a regular basis.

Organize technical presentations, tours, and happy hours to interact with fellow structural engineers and students.

Organize joint technical and social events with other local SEI Chapters and National Committee.

Connect with SEI National leaders and participate in the National Events and Conferences.

Reach out to local structural engineers and leaders and get them involved with SEI Los Angeles Chapter.

CHARLES LAYMAN, PE | CHAIR

Charles Layman, PE works as a Bridge Engineer at HDR. He has structural engineering design and rehabilitation experience in a variety of bridge structures across North America working with several DOTs, ranging from small projects all the way to megaprojects. He moved to the Los Angeles area in early 2024 after working on the East Coast for several years. He received his MS and BS degrees in Civil Engineering (Structural Engineering and Materials) at Virginia Tech. He is involved with both ASCE MLAB and ASCE LA YMF. Throughout his college career he was involved with ASCE and SEI and was active in the Steel Bridge competition. In his spare time, Charles enjoys spending time with his partner and pets, going hiking, trying new foods, and overall exploring new experiences.
