On July 17, 2021, eight members of the ASCE LA Section Sustainability Committee (LASSC) and ASCE Metropolitan Los Angeles Branch (MLAB) Sustainability Committee volunteered at an in-person trash cleanup at the Compton Creek at Del Amo Metro Station from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM. The cleanup event was one of many hosted by the Friends of the LA River and their partners to prevent litter from flowing from the LA rivers into the Pacific Ocean. Advance registration was required in order to limit attendance and follow COVID-19 protocols to social distance. Volunteers were supplied with kits that contained gloves, trash bags, and LA River maps. The team worked hard to clean up trash located near the bridges and stuck in shrubs at the bottom of the riverbed. The group found it interesting to learn about the habitats that the shrubs and cattails provide for birds and other organisms. Please check out https://folar.org/cleanup/ for future clean up events and to learn more about Friends of LA River.
